If you buy chicks without talking to breeders, you may pick a bad chick. In their natural habitat, the Great Blue Herons live from 15 to 20 years; in captivity, they live 20-23 years. Unlike other species that suffer from plume hunters and pesticides, birds of this species are rather strong and their population remains stable lately. The females lay from 3 to 7 light green eggs in a clutch. The juvenile differ from the adult birds with a gray crown, a dark upper bill, rusty brown edging to back feathers, and lacks body plumes; they hatch with opened eyes and can hold head up just after hatching. If you buy chicks without talking to breeders, you may pick a bad chick.
